PADS Lake County

Building Community Buy-In Through Strategy, Story + Design

The Challenge

PADS Lake County was preparing to open Pathways, a new fixed-site shelter designed to help individuals and families move toward greater stability and permanent housing.

But opening a homeless shelter isn't simply a communications challenge — it can also be a community-relations challenge. Concerns about homelessness, safety and neighborhood impact can quickly create NIMBY resistance.

PADS needed to do more than announce a new facility. They needed to help the community understand why Pathways mattered, how it would work and the role the community played in its success.

The Strategy

Using the StoryBrand Marketing Framework, I helped shift the story away from making PADS the hero. The community became the hero.

Instead of saying “Look what PADS has built,” the messaging communicated:

Together, you are helping create a pathway to stability for your neighbors.

The strategy also connected to a fundamental idea behind Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: before people can focus on long-term goals, employment, relationships or rebuilding their lives, their most basic needs for shelter and safety must first be addressed.

When someone doesn't know where they will safely sleep that night, moving forward becomes exponentially harder. Pathways helps provide that foundation — creating the stability needed for people to begin focusing on what comes next.

The StoryBrand problem → solution → outcome structure became a foundation for the communications:

The Problem
People experiencing homelessness are often trying to solve complex challenges while their most basic needs for safety and shelter remain uncertain.

The Solution
Pathways provides a safe, stable place to stay while bringing services and support together in one location — giving individuals and families a stronger foundation from which to move forward.

The Outcome
With that foundation in place — and the community behind them — people have a greater opportunity to move from crisis toward stability, independence and permanent housing.

Bringing the Story to Life

I translated that strategy into a cohesive visual and verbal system across:

  • Pathways launch and ribbon-cutting communications

  • Fundraising campaigns and events

  • Sponsor and donor recognition

  • Social media and video

  • Environmental graphics and wayfinding

  • Brand standards and messaging

  • Documentary storytelling

At every touchpoint, the goal was to show the human impact, reinforce the community's role and clearly demonstrate how Pathways helps address homelessness in a practical, meaningful way.

Rather than simply saying homelessness is a problem, the communications showed how Pathways responds to that problem — by providing safety, stability, services and a clearer path toward permanent housing.

The Result

What began as individual design projects developed into a broader creative partnership encompassing brand strategy, messaging, design, campaigns and storytelling.

The work helped PADS communicate a complex and potentially sensitive initiative through a clearer narrative, based on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: Before people can move forward, they need a safe place to begin. Pathways provides that foundation — and the community helps make it possible.
